RedHat ( Centos 5 )
After failling to install a 32bit JVM on Ubuntu, i try Centos5 ( which the IT guy says is made up of the same binary at
RedHat).

I manage to install it but got:

#
# An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine:
#
# SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0xf799f97c, pid=14675, tid=4149266960

#
# An error report file with more information is saved as hs_err_pid14675.log

I guess that's nothing you guys would not something about? I think next would by to try RedHat then if that doesn't
work I can go after someone's head.
Re: RedHat ( Centos 5 )
Sheesh we should just ship a VMWare appliance, instead of an installer! ;-)

Would be nice to experiment but I want to get rid of Windows/Vista to get sppppeeeeedddddd. From what I hear cygwin is
to blame.

Re: RedHat ( Centos 5 )
But how did you fail to install the 32bit JVM on Ubuntu? I installed it via Synaptic Package Manager.

I installed the ia32-sun-java6-bin package, and it seemed to be fine?

Yep, it was that simple... My problem came from trying to use Add/Remove option instead of the Synaptic Package Manager
. I`m now up and running with Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit.

The PC is running Vista 64, 4Gig ram with 4 core processor. I`m testing Ubuntu under VMWare, to my amazement the
virtual machine running Ubuntu is faster than the real Vista machine! A compile of a library takes 60 seconds for Vista
, 45 seconds for Ubuntu. Parallel make is setup to use 4 jobs under Vista and 2 jobs under Ubuntu.... Want more? On
Vista I setup the temp folder to be on a ram disk which Ubuntu doesn`t have.

A make clean of an already clean project takes 45 seconds for Vista, 7 for Ubuntu !!!!!

That means I`m better off working from Ubuntu in a virtual machine then real Vista machine. I just can`t wait to see
Ubuntu running on a real machine.

Something is badly broken under Vista. I suspect Cygwin may have something to do with it, on XP doing a make clean takes
15 seconds, faster than Vista, but still twice as slow as the Ubuntu virtual machine!

I`m using a makefile project, I only had to make simple changes to get our build environment to work under Linux.

I moved the Virtual machine on a XP machine and the virtual machine manages to outrun the real machine. The difference
is not as big as with Vista, but the speed difference is significant enough to justify using Momentics through the VM
full time.

Maybe you guys could think of dropping support for Windows all together. Make a deal with VMWare and bundle Workstation
with the Windows install. Half kidding...
