What laptops are supported
It is time again to replace my developement machine.
Took my best guess and picked up an Acer Aspire 7741Z-4449 and ran the latest
QNX 4 Install Disk (Software Update 10). Set diagnostics mode and the install
dies while checking hardware and I am left with the base photon screen. Tried disabling
various combinations of hardware and it still dies.
So going to take this laptop back to Staples.
Can someone tell me a current laptop they have successfully loaded QNX4 onto.

Re: What laptops are supported
I think it;s because of video adapter. Occasionly crttrap hangs "on the flat place".
During the install process, somewhere in the beginning, you can choose VGA mode, and further don't trap the video. At
installed system try to configure your video manually, without crttrap, using drivers from last realises. Check the
crttrap.list file for conformation to video chipset.
In fact, the flat-mode of video available on any video adapters. Even if it's not ofcially supported yet. In this case
you can use showpci and vesainfo utilites, and check out the help of Hydra.ms mode switcher.
And I don't ask you, what for to use the gamers laptop with QNX. Apparently, you have the reason. ;)

Re: What laptops are supported
Vladimir
It is already set for 16 color VGA mode in the startup options.
I turned on verbose mode and I can see it get through video setup.
When I get the installer screen, I turn on diagnostics (F12) and proceed
to the next screen which
brings up the list of hardware to auto-detect. If I turn off everything
but the keyboard, it will get through this screen
and on to the next screen, otherwise the install script is aborted.
I dont think this is a gamer laptop. It was just the cheapest laptop at
staples that had a broadcom 57xx chipset that I hoped woruld be
supported by QNX4 ($400.00)

Re: What laptops are supported
I can remember, that QNX4 don't like a gigabit cards and nettrap can to hang. But for Broadcom 57xx the is a driver:
http://www.qnx.com/download/feature.html?programid=17010
Try to disable just the nettrap in installation procedure and configure the network later, manually. If that not helps
to you, I afraid that you should to purchaise some antic laptop, may be used one. QNX 4 not supported any more. Some
Dell models with COM port was quite good.
Good luck!

Re: What laptops are supported
Vladimir
Thanks for the info.
In hindsight, I am kicking myself for not buying a second Toshiba M40X,
which is what I am using now.
I am surprised that no one else has run into this issue. Would love to
hear from someone
who has recently purchased a Laptop which loaded QNX 4 ok.

Re: What laptops are supported
There is another one path to install QNX. It can be done without installer. If you have another computer with installed
QNX4, you can dismount the harddrive from you notebook, connect it to desktop and copy the system. But there are some
expirience needed, because you have to configure everything manually, beginning from the microcore.

Re: What laptops are supported
Hi Dave,
Recently I got modern CPU board with PCI BIOS which is incompatible with
QNX4. As a result any executable hangs when it calls PCI function. I've
downgrade BIOS firmware and board has started to work fine.
Maybe it's your case. Please, boot from the latest QNX4 Update CD, launch
shell and run Fsys.atapi, for example. Post here output which you'll get.

Re: What laptops are supported
This is absolutely a PCI BIOS issue. If another version of BIOS firmware is
available for your mainboard then try to flash it.

Re: What laptops are supported
Oleg
Can you give me any additional information on the compatibility issue ?
Will probably just return unit. There are older BIOS's available (back
to V1.09), but as I do not know how far back I
have to go to correct the problem, I will probably end up with a
computer that is not returnable as it has been
altered from the state I purchased it in.

Re: What laptops are supported
It seems that PCI BIOS of your computer isn't compatible to CPU protected
mode. So there are two options to resolve this issue:
1. Try all available BIOS firmwares with hope that it'll help.
2. Install QNX4 on VMWare. I recommend this option if you don't need QNX4
on real hardware.

Re: What laptops are supported
Oleg
Found another solution. Went to the local computer store that sells
off-lease computers.
Store owner had no problem with me running QNX boot disk on the laptops.
Tried a Dell first, no go, then tried an HP Compaq nc6120....Worked just
fine...hardware detect found all the bits and pieces, including the
Broadcom net chipset.
Going to purchase a second one for backup.

Re: What laptops are supported
Hi Dave,
Surely, testing how QNX is working on hardware before purchasing is the
best way to get compatible hardware.
