QNX 6.3.2 x86 native ISO wont install
After some time off from the QNX world, I'm pleased to know that 6.3.2 got a less restrictive usage from what happened
step-by-step from 6.1 to 6.3 (see my post on OpenQNX about this subject). Yet I'm surprised I cannot install it on my
new development machine, a Jetway J7F2WE2G motherboard (VIA C7 @ 2 GHz, 1 GiB DDR-2 @ 533 MHz, 500 GB SATA HD, ...),

David,

First, welcome back :-)

And thanks for that detailed report. I haven't seen this before so I'll need
some more info. Can you try the "Run from CD" option? If so please run the
get_hw_info script. This puts some detailed information about your machine
in /tmp/hw-info-<hostname>. This is in a ram disk so you will need to copy
it to physical media first. That should help narrow down the cause.

Thanks,
Keith

Re: QNX 6.3.2 x86 native ISO wont install
Here it is ! Please notice that the LiveCD has every booted successfully, so I don't think it's a pure hardware issue,
but mostly the installer that has brought me the very same installation problem from 6.2.1 since I upgraded to a 200 GB
hard-drive in my previous computer, see here :

http://www.openqnx.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=3365
http://www.openqnx.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=3419

So I'm a bit at lost for quite a long time and only wanted to come back since the lincensing theme has changed
(loosened) a bit. So I hope the report attached below could help to fix the issue that last for quite a long time...

Just wanted to know, as you might see in the report file that my machine features an embedded VIA Unichrome Pro AGPx8
VGA adapter + a nVidia FX 5200 DualHead on the PCI bus, if I could run QNX 6.3.2 in TripleHead mode like I do in my
other OSes. I had found it difficult to settle the Matrox G550 DualHead configuration working in my previous experience,
 see here :

Thanks for any help :)

Ho, and by the way, if it is possible to came back to the original QNX 6.2.x theme designed by Bill Bull (i guess)

QNX theme by William Bull, sorry... So if it's possible to switch it back in QNX 6.3.2 (through the theme selector for
instance)

PS : sorry to add reply, I wanted to modify my previous one, yet while being logged in, I cannot...
RE: QNX 6.3.2 x86 native ISO wont install
Hi David,

Looking at the output of the hw script I notice you have 11 or 12 partitions
on that hard disk. Is that correct? It is a remote possibility that the
installer is getting confused by so many extended partitions. Can you tell
me the partition layout so I can confirm and possibly reproduce?

I do know that the size of the drive should not be an issue. I have a 150GB
drive with no problems. About the only other thing I can think of is the
SATA controller is not supported. I noticed in the output that the hard disk
was being set to UDMA 2 instead of 5 or 6 like I would expect. I'm not a
block driver expert by any means but I would say that's part of the problem.
We only introduced SATA support in 6.3.0SP3, I believe, so you may want to
double check with your support rep so see if it is officially supported.

RE: QNX 6.3.2 x86 native ISO wont install
Hmmm, I must confess I DO have several partitions on this VIA based computer :
- 1 primary with Win XP, then 1 big 420 MB extended with 12 partitions :
+ 1 Win 2K (16 GB)
+ 1 Reserved for QNX (16 GB)
+ 1 Ubuntu (16 GB)
+ 1 Linux swap (2 GB)
+ 1 Debian boot (Fedora) (0.2 GB)
+ 1 XOSL boot (0.1 GB)
+ 1 Fedora (14 GB)
+ 1 Fat32 (16 GB)
+ 1 Ntfs (64 GB)
+ 3 Fat32 (276 GB)
Yet consider that trying to install 6.2.1 on a non-SATA enhanced computer with a 200 GB hard-disk, with several less
partitions (1 primary plus 6 extended) led to the very same problem. There is a legacy ATA limit (137 GB) yet my BIOS
perhaps do have troubles working in LBA48 mode. But my other computer worked flawlessly on LBA48, however was also
incompetent to install QNX.

Thanks for your checking, I'll wait a bit further until the installer is updated. Just notice that XOSL is GPLed, so
maybe you might check its SRC to see how it performs...

RE: QNX 6.3.2 x86 native ISO wont install
Well, if it's the extended partition you want to install Neutrino in then
that's your problem, likely. Try freeing up some space for a primary
partition (that's what the Neutrino installer creates). 6.2.1 wouldn't work
most likely but the 6.3.2 driver should support larger disks with no
problem. Try a setup with fewer extended partitions using 6.3.2. That's
about all I can suggest at this point. I have had no issues at all with a
configuration consisting of just primary partitions so you may want to start
there.

RE: QNX 6.3.2 x86 native ISO wont install
I cannot even try to install over Windows XP as the installer fails just at the partition choice. I'll delete some
extended partitions tonite (from Win 2K to NTFS) and check if it's an installer issue... Thanks for the feedback !

Re: RE: QNX 6.3.2 x86 native ISO wont install
I installed QNX 6.3.2 under QEmu 0.9.1 without any problem, on a virtual 50 GB hard disk. I then made a drive image of
that partition, got it out from the virtual hard disk and tried to set it back on my physical hard drive where QNX is
supposed to be (the virtual hard drive structure was set the same to ensure it could succeed) Sadly the QNX installer
modified/moved things out from the FAT allocation so my drive image program refused me to go any further with my disk
image, in order to leave my physical hard drive out of trouble. May I expect some changes in the installer (loader ?) in
the future to accommodate current hardware ? Try out my Jetway J7F2 motherboard from here for instance : http://www.
mini-itx.com/store/?c=34#j7f2 then add it 1 GiB DDR-2 533 memory plus a 500 GB SATA HD...

Kochise
Got it installed !
I tried again yesterday (I cannot be left on a failure, it just puts me on my nerves) and this time, I forgot my USB key
in its plug hole. When it showed the installed disks, the installer showed the same behavior than previously, but this
time something strange appeared on the USB line (F2) what gave me the hint. I restarted the install process from scratch
(I had no other choice after all since the installer failed again) but when "Press the space bar to input boot options
or D to disable DMA..." popped, I pressed the space bar and explored the options. I selected one of them, "Disable all
but EIDE", and continued the install process without any problem ! Go figure... Still the installer in its current form
is a failure, far too much unnecessarily complicated and cryptic...

Yet I encounter another problem, make my PCI nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Dual VGA and my AGP VIA UniChrome Pro display
adapters working all together. Currently only my primary FX 5200 works in 'vesabios' mode !

Re: Got it installed !
I have just run into the same problem. The installation disk for 6.3.2 does not see hd0t77. I have an older Dell
Dimension 2350 with a 60 GB disk on which I have created 4 primary partitions. I have run fdisk from the cd and it will
create a t77 or t79, display all partitions and I have even installed the QNX bootloader, which works, but there is no
way I can mount partitions /dev contains hd0 but none of the partitions.

The four partitions are
1 type 222 31 mb Dell dos diagnostics
2 type 7 47 GB NTFS
3 type 79 7 GB I also tried type 78, 79
4 type 12 3 GB Fat32

I have tried varius combinations of mount and devb-eide with no joy. the partitions do not appear. If I try to install,
it asks me to delete and recreate the t77 partition and that seems to work, but then it cannot find the partition and
quits.

I tried "disable disk controllers other than EIDE" with no success.

Any ideas ?
