Boot Cd fails-QNX Neutrino (6.3.2) Host on VIA Eden/CX700 M2
Hi,

I downloaded the latest version of QNX Momentics 6.3.2 Neutrino Host CD ISO from QNX download center.

I have an EBX board with VIA Eden C7 processor,CX700M2 unichrome graphic chipset with 512 MB memory and Two SATA drive
connectors and two PATA drive connectors (traditional IDE drives).

I tried booting it (after burning the ISO to a CD) on my computer(EBX board) but it does not boot. I gives me the
message:

"Hit ESC for .altboot"

and then it just restarts the system again and then keeps doing it again and again. I have tried combination of SATA/
PATA drives but was not able to get it working.

Also earlier I had posted this question to the openqnx forum (http://www.openqnx.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t10216-.html)
and someone suggested me to use the legacy mode. I tried that but no success.

I have tried the following with no success so far:

1. Legacy/Native modes in BIOS did not work.
2. I tried USB-CDROM after disconnecting IDE CD ROM. did not work
3. I also tried SATA CD-ROM. That also did not work.

In all the above 3 cases, the system gets restarting.

Lastly, I did some research on qnx website and the closest thing that I found was the sentence "devb-ahci and devb-eide
compete for the same bus, which results in a hang."
http://www.qnx.com/developers/docs/6.3.2/momentics/release_notes/rel_6.3.2.html#Issues_booting

Anybody has ideas regarding what might be the problem?

Will really appreciate your help.
RE: Boot Cd fails-QNX Neutrino (6.3.2) Host on VIA Eden/CX700 M2
Hi Kushal,

The first things to do is to verify the CD was burned correctly. And that
the downloaded ISO was not corrupted. You should verify the checksum of the
downloaded ISO against the values posted on the download site.

The boot image isn't being loaded. This means the OS hasn't been loaded so
any question of disk drivers is irrelevant. The boot loader uses BIOS calls
to load disk sectors directly into RAM so either the ISO (or CD) is corrupt
or something very, very odd is happening with the boot loader. It's remotely
possible that the loader is using BIOS instructions which your BIOS doesn't
handle (i.e. newer instructions on an older BIOS).

If the checksums verify then there are a couple of other things to look at.
If there is a floppy drive you can try making a custom boot image using a
different loader. That's a stretch, though.

Cheers,
Keith

Hi Keith,

Thanks for your response and instructions.

I have verified checksum and it is correct. Also just to test out, I
tried booting the CD on a different configuration board and I was able
to boot and install QNX. But when I try to boot on my original board
(VIA) it just bombs.

I think the loader is able to partially load itself because I do the
initial message:
"Hit ESC for .altboot"

And then the CD makes sound as if the loader is going to start its
operation and I can see the progress bar of dots (.....) moving forward
but then it just bombs in 3-4 seconds and the system restarts.

What else can I try to debug this issue and find out what is happening
behind the scenes?

Thank you once again.

Kushal

Hi Kushal,

Ahh...you see the dots? That's a good sign, anyway. What, exactly, is on the
screen before it boots? How far along the following sequence does it get:

--begin--

Hit ESC for .altboot....................................................
...........................

Press space for options

--end--

That would help me to diagnose the problem...

OK. Well, that's a bit different, then. If the image could not be read you'd
likely see a 'C' at the end of the dots.

Jeevan had a suggestion to try it with a pre-installed drive. If you could
try that then at least we can see if it's a generic problem (i.e. bad
instruction causing a fault or reboot) or a problem specific to the CD
image.

If the issue is specific to the CD: What options do you have on that machine
for booting? Do you have a floppy? What about USB devices? There are options
to startup and procnto or increasing the verbosity but, of course, you need
to make a new boot image and somehow boot it. USB drives or floppy are the
easiest in this case.

I did that. But the same results. When the drive boots it displays the
message:

--begin--
Press F1-F4 to select drive or select a partition:1,2?1
Hit ESC for .altboot
--end--
And then it bombs and restarts.

I can pretty much boot from a USB Hard Drive, USB Floppy, IDE Floppy,
SATA Drive/CD-ROM, etc.

Thanks for all your help and support. Really appreciate it.

Hi Kushal,

Can You try to remove/displug all the present drives and take a preinstalled QNX version on standard eide-drive, plug
that in and see is that boots ?

I am impressed by Your persistence and patience.

Kind Regards,
Jeevan

--begin--
Press F1-F4 to select drive or select a partition:1,2?1
Hit ESC for .altboot
--end--
And then it bombs and restarts.

"What options do you have on that machine for booting? Do you have a
floppy? What about USB devices?"
I can pretty much boot from a USB Hard Drive, USB Floppy, IDE Floppy,
SATA Drive/CD-ROM, etc.

Thanks for all your help and support. Really appreciate it.

Hmmm, this is a tough nut to crack.

What further comes into my mind is:
1.
This "Hit ESC for .altboot" messages comes from the second stage bootloader. (/boot/sys/ipl-diskpc2)

Apologize this stupid question:
Did You indeed tried to Hit ESC ?
Suppose it made no diff.

2. Trying another second stage bootloader.

3.
Starting the startup-bios -vvvvvvvvvvvvv in Your hd-image to see if perhaps something more appears.
We do have a released x86 BIOS BSP with startup code in source.

4. using some hw debugger

5. a combination of 1-4

Hope this helps.

RE: Boot Cd fails-QNX Neutrino (6.3.2) Host on VIA Eden/CX700 M2

Thanks Jeevan for the info.

"2. Trying another second stage bootloader."
How do I do that? Can you show me some pointers?

Also for
"3.
Starting the startup-bios -vvvvvvvvvvvvv in Your hd-image to see if
perhaps something more appears. We do have a released x86 BIOS BSP with
startup code in source.

4. using some hw debugger"

Is there any manual which explains how to do 3 and 4 above while we
debug this issue. I am quite new to VxWorks so don't know much about the
nitty gritty except some few basic admin/user commands.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Contact Your QNX- sales/support rep to get one.
Or search the web for something like ipl-diskpc2* ,*= quite , nomsg, fast etc...
(A few years I go I found one or 2 but that link is broken now.)

Then use dloader utility to get it onto Your hd drive.

Docs You should read:

/root# cd /boot/build

edit for example this file:

/boot/build# ped qnxbasedma.build
#
# The build file for QNX Neutrino booting on a PC
#
[virtual=x86,bios +compress] boot = {
        # Reserve 64k of video memory to handle multiple video cards
        startup-bios -s64k -vvvv #Here the vvvvvv's

        # PATH is the *safe* path for executables (confstr(_CS_PATH...))
        # LD_LIBRARY_PATH is the *safe* path for libraries (confstr(_CS_LIBPATH))
        # i.e. This is the path searched for libs in setuid/setgid executables.
/boot/build#

mkifs -v qnxbasedma.build /.boot //build the image

reboot the machine.

Re: RE: Boot Cd fails-QNX Neutrino (6.3.2) Host on VIA Eden/CX700 M2
I realize this is an old thread, but since it will be searched in the future by folks with the same problem I'd just
like to point out the x86 processor family does not have any type of support for JTAG debuggers.

It seems that we need a good debug version of ipl-diskpc2 to diagnose this type of issue.
