Can't install SDP 6.4.1 on Dell Optiplex 760
Could anybody advice some troubleshooting steps to boot the Neutrino setup CD on this machine?

Dell Optiplex 760, CPU Q8300, 4 GB RAM, onboard video, USB keyboard and mouse. HD and DVD are SATA; set to ACHI mode.

Neither 6.3.2 or 6.4.1 setup CD can boot on this PC.
After the message "Booting QNX SDP..." (lots of dots) it hangs dead, does not even react to 3-finger salute. These CDs
boot fine in VMWare.

I've restricted RAM size to 256 MB and one CPU in BIOS settings.
The FAQ adviced to set "non-PnP OS", but this BIOS has no such option.
Setting disks to ATA mode doesn't help.
Pressing ESC for altboot does not help.

Any idea, please?

Hi,

Perhaps it's related with the known problem for "no PS2" systems?

On this last link you have a workaround.

Re: Can't install SDP 6.4.1 on Dell Optiplex 760
I'm sorry, my previous reply was in error (this was a different machine)

The PS/2 issue is not why Dell Optiplex 760 won't boot QNX.

The boot process stops early, even before booting the kernel.

When it boots from a CD, it displays a message "booting QNX SDP...." then - nothing.

(v. 6.3.2 CD displays "Hit ESC for .altboot..........)

When it boots off a SATA disk, installed on older PC - it prompts for partition, then prompts for a boot loader.

Whatever bootloader I select, it hangs after message "QNX v1.2b Boot Loader: qnxbase.ifs ....." and then - nothing.

This is a Intel Core Quad machine, has a SATA DVD,
3 GB RAM, no PATA controllers and no PS/2.
Switching SATA modes (ATA, legacy, AHCI) does not help.
I've disconnected all other disks and devices.

Isn't it embarassing that the latest version of a high reliability OS won't provide a single clue about a reason of the
failure, and just hangs, like the old MS DOS?

So since it is not a PS/2 issue, what else can we try before dumping this (otherwise quite good) machine?

Thanks a lot, it was that. Solved.
