sample code for application reading serial port and dealing with overrun errors etc

I am looking for samples on how to detect overrun, framing etc errors in an application under qnx 6.

Is there a way to detect errors on an old fashioned RS232/485 etc serial port without having a higher level protocol 
running on top of it?
