USB Driver Fault.
I am using the latest QNX Product Suite from 2011 and the latest USB Stack but I am having problems with the mouse.
The mouse pointer moves up and down only, the keyboard works well.
I have attempted to use a number of different types of mice but they all have the same issue.
Also I have tried to use three different types of PCs with QNX 4.25 installed, all with the same problem.
All of the mice I have tried work well on Windows 7 and Windows XP suggesting that there is a problem with the QNX USB
driver.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Pete,
Is it the same issue you've described on topc22226?
http://community.qnx.com/sf/discussion/do/listPosts/projects.qnx4/discussion.general.topc22226
Do you use a USB to PS/2 adapter?
Please provide sin ar and usb -vvv output.

Hello Pavel,
Yes it is the same issue but I didn't have any feedback so I thought I would rephrase it.
It may sound like a non problem and you may ask why not just use a USB keyboard and mouse, the answer we cannot because
the system is in the far east and we are using a very expensive integrated industrial PS/2 keyboard and mouse and the PC
is USB only.
We have tried multiple USB to PS/2 adapters, the one I am using at this moment is StarTech one.
I have attached the requested information.
Thank you for responding.
Regards,
Pete

Hi Pete,
The mouse driver was not tested with USB to PS/2 adapters so it can work
incorrectly in such configuration.
I have an idea what can be wrong. Please try driver from the attach in
verbose mode and provide output.

Hi Pete,
Please try your adapter in the QNX6.5.
QNX4 USB stack is ported from the QNX6 and if your adapter works
correctly in the QNX6.5 than the problem is in USB stack port. We will
add a PR and will try to fix it.
If the USB to PS/2 adapter is not working correctly in QNX6.5 then we
can state the fact that QNX does not support this type of adapter and
perhaps custom development will be required.
You can download QNX6.5.0 SDP iso image from:
http://www.qnx.com/download/feature.html?programid=21367
Start the QNX6 from CD (LiveCD mode) and test your adapter.
Regards,
Pavel

Hi Pavel,
I have downloaded the QNX 6.5 SDP and booted up into LiveCD mode.
The mouse and keyboard work without any issues.

Pete

Hi Pete,
Please try your adapter in the QNX6.5.
QNX4 USB stack is ported from the QNX6 and if your adapter works correctly in the QNX6.5 than the problem is in USB
stack port. We will add a PR and will try to fix it.
If the USB to PS/2 adapter is not working correctly in QNX6.5 then we can state the fact that QNX does not support this
type of adapter and perhaps custom development will be required.
You can download QNX6.5.0 SDP iso image from:
http://www.qnx.com/download/feature.html?programid=21367
Start the QNX6 from CD (LiveCD mode) and test your adapter.

Pavel

Hello. I would just like to mention that I am having the exact same symptoms with a USB mouse using the same install of
QNX4 (June 14, 2011 version), except my mouse is true USB and not USB converted to PS/2. I do note that QNX4 is seeing
the mouse as PS/2, however, even though it's USB. I am watching this thread with great interest and will try whatever
patch is provided for the original trouble ticket posted by Pete Macereth. Thanks.

Hi, Pavel. I have the exact same problem in which the photon mouse in a June 2012 QNX 4.25 build goes haywire when I
use it. It's a USB mouse which I have figured out is converted by the bios and case into PS/2 (QNX4 sees it as PS2).
But I can't figure out how to try your new devu-mouse driver.
The Input.1 file called by sysinit.1 spawns the input driver with:
Input kbd fd -d/dev/kbd ps2 -r kb -2 &
But anything I try to do with "devu-mouse -a" halts photon from coming up or even halts QNX4 from coming up if it
clobbers the input driver for the keyboard.
Could you give me a tip on what to change to take advantage of your USB mouse in PS/2 format driver change? We're
getting ready to order 8 more QNX4 licenses to go on computers like this one, and they won't work if I can't get the
mouse to work.
Thanks very much.

Gil Lande

Hi Guillermo,
I guess you have another type of problem than Pete Mackereth.
You are using a USB mouse in PS/2 legacy mode. With some BIOSes the
Input manager can work incorrectly in such configuration and cause
erratical mouse behaviour.
First of all modify the /etc/config/trap/input.<node> file. Try to
remove -r option (for the ps2 protocol). E.g:
kbd fd -d/dev/kbd ps2 kb -2
Sometimes it helps.
Another way is to work with a USB mouse as with a USB device. For that
you have to run the io-usb stack and the devu-mouse driver before the
Photon GUI.
You can add following lines to the /etc/config/trap/sysinit.<node> if
needed, e.g.:
io-usb
devu-mouse
After that modify your /etc/config/trap/input.<node>. It should contain
following lines:
kbd kb
msoft fd -d/dev/usbmouse0
Please note that this example is for a configuration with a USB mouse
and a PS/2 keyboard.
Regards,
Pavel

Hi, Pavel.
Thanks for the suggestions. They did not work, though. I still think what I am experiencing is similar to Pete
Mackereth because I am using a Microsoft USB mouse (3-button) and a Keytronic USB keyboard. But the QNX4 2011 install CD
can't see them as USB, and if I turn on searching for USB plug and play in diagnostics mode the installation freezes.
If I let QNX4 install without USB plug and play but with the bios turning on USB mouse and keyboard support the QNX4
installation sets the keyboard and mouse both to PS/2. The keyboard works fine, but when photon launches the mouse is
completely erratic going all over the place and right and left clicking constantly on all movement.
The bios versions are:
CMOS - Phoenix Award Bios v6.00PG
AHCI Bios - Not installed
ATA - IT8211ATAPI Bios v.1.3.1.67
If I change /etc/config/trap/input.1
old: kbd fd -d/dev/kbd ps2 -r kb -2
new: kbd fd -d/dev/kbd ps2 kb -2
The mouse still has the erratic behavior. I also tried the equivalent change to /etc/config/bin/Input.1 just in case,
but that also did not help.
Next I put your latest devu-mouse driver in the /bin directory and added:
io-usb &
devu-mouse &
to the /etc/config/sysinit.1 file before photon initializes.
And I replaced the /etc/config/trap/input.1 file with one which has:
kbd kb
msoft fd -d/dev/usbmouse0
This had the fatal error of not allowing me to use the keyboard at all, and I could not even use phindows to get into the node to type. It was stuck at the "login:" prompt. But fortunately I kept an alternate boot and was able to restore it. Before restoring it I tried turning off USB mouse support in the bios to see if that would let QNX4 see it as USB instead of PS/2, but that did not help. It was still stuck in the login prompt without ability to type.
I've put it all back, but as it is now QNX4 only sees the mouse and keyboard as PS/2 and does not see them as USB even though they are USB. In photon the mouse is completely erratic, but I can use phindows from a Windows system as an alternate method to use GUI's and type.
Any suggestions you can offer from here will be greatly appreciated as we plan to order our QNX4 licenses going forward for these PC types because we need the PCI-E slots in them for the encryption cards. Right now Photons is useless and even dangerous with the mouse as it is.
Thanks very much.

Gil Lande

Hi Guillermo,
If you have a remote connection (Phindows or telnet) you can safely
experiment with the Input manager. Run Photon, establish remote
connection and try to restart the Input manager manually with different
parameters. E.g.
# slay -f Input
# Input -d /dev/photon kbd fd -d/dev/kbd ps2 -r kb -2 &
Launch separate Input managers for a mouse and a keyboard:
# slay -f Input
# Input -d /dev/photon kbd kb &
# Input -d /dev/photon ps2 -r kb -2 &
Also it will be interesting to look at the usb -vvv output. For that run:
# io-usb
# usb -vvv
Please provide usb -vvv output and additional information about your system:
show_pci -vvv
sin
sin ar
sin ir
Please note that when you start the io-usb manager it initializes all
USB ports and from that moment your USB mouse and USB keyboard will not
work in PS/2 legacy mode.

Pavel

Mackereth because I am using a Microsoft USB mouse (3-button) and a Keytronic USB keyboard. But the QNX4 2011 install CD
can't see them as USB, and if I turn on searching for USB plug and play in diagnostics mode the installation freezes.
If I let QNX4 install without USB plug and play but with the bios turning on USB mouse and keyboard support the QNX4
installation sets the keyboard and mouse both to PS/2. The keyboard works fine, but when photon launches the mouse is
completely erratic going all over the place and right and left clicking constantly on all movement.

Thanks for the great suggestions, Pavel. I will start doing them. In my tests I had earlier done show_pci -vvv to
verify it saw the USB controllers (even though the QNX4 installation disk could not). But I will perform the tests you
recommended and submit the results later today. Thanks again.

Hi, Pavel.
In the sixteen years I've ween working with QNX and the thirteen with QNX4 I never thought of starting a photon session
within a pterm itself. That was a neat test. Per your suggestion I used Phindows to spawn a pterm connection and then
started a photon session within it (by typing "ph").
First I performed:
# slay -f Input
# Input -d /dev/photon kbd fd -d/dev/kbd ps2 -r kb -2 &
The Input program crashed right away. I repeated the test without the "-r" and had the same result.
Next I performed:
# slay -f Input (even though Input was already crashed and down)
# Input -d /dev/photon kbd kb & (Input crashed right away)
# Input -d /dev/photon ps2 -r kb -2 & (Input crashed right away)
So this also failed to spawn the Input drivers. Hitting "enter" after each command came back with the message that the
process had died.
For the outputs you requested I zipped them into "usb_test.zip" (hopefully attached).
It contains the following files:
- usb_show_pci_vvv.txt (output of show_pci -vvv)
- usb_sin.txt (output of sin)
- usb_sin_ar.txt (output of sin args)
- usb_sin_ir.txt (output of sin irq)
- usb_sin_ver.txt (output of sin version just in case you want that)
- usb_usb_vvv.txt (output of usb -vvv)
I did a textto -c on each of the files in case you read them in Windows.
Thanks very much.
Regards,
Guillermo Lande
(Side note, we just put an order in for several of these PC's so will be buying QNX4 licenses for them soon. Hopefully
this all works out. Thanks again.)

(Follow up)
Hi, Pavel. I took a good look at the terminal windows and suspect the lines I typed the first time were in pseudo
terminals instead of the actual photon session. So just in case I moved aside any pterm windows and typed inside the
actual photon session. Starting the drivers in there froze the windows completely.
For instance, typing: Input -d /dev/photon kbd fd -d/dev/kbd ps2 -r kb -2 &
froze everything. I cannot change any consoles or move anything, and I suspect the whole phditto session ended.
I also cannot start a new Phindows session (so I am going to the lab to reboot the PC right now). I don't know it
mattered for your test whether I had typed in a pterm or a photon session, but I tried both ways now. Thanks.

(Follow up #2)
Pavel, the more I think about the clues the more I think there is an IRQ conflict whenever the USB mouse and keyboard
are used.
1. When installing QNX4, if I use diagnostics mode and tell it to check the USB plug and play the installation
completely freezes. If I don't have it check the USB plug and play it installs fine but treats the USB mouse and
keyboard as PS/2.
2. When I start the mouse as USB QNX freezes and requires a reboot. If it starts in the initialization files it never
comes up all the way and halts without allowing login or connection.
3. I have seen signs in the field of USB conflict with other hardware which uses the same IRQ. Before we started using
USB mouse and keyboard we never had problems, but we figured out a pattern in which all systems which started using the
USB mouse and keyboard had mysterious cases where the hardware would fail to respond. It only started with USB mouse
and keyboard.
Early into trouble shooting I checked the bios to see if I could control IRQ's like I could in the old legacy days of
ISA, but I can't anymore.
I saw in some of the recent patch notes that there are fixes for USB conflicts, but I think there are still problems
with it. And I'm using the latest QNX4 installation CD (June 2011).
I look forward to any more suggestions or solutions you can offer.
Thanks very much.
Regards,
Guillermo Lande
