Hi,
The 6.5 sp1 notes indicate the microgui will be deprecated in the future. Any ideas as to what the HMI roadmap looks
like? Is it the QNX screens product mentioned in the release notes as well? Will there be an easy conversion of
microgui based projects to whatever the new GUI system is? Am I just reading too much into the release note (hopefully)
?

Hi,
There are other solutions for UI design on QNX and one alternative is Storyboard Suite. Crank Software provides a user
interface development tool and runtime, Storyboard, which is optimized for QNX. The tool is eclipse based so it works
with Momentics and the runtime is optimized for embedded systems and can take full advantage of the system resources
such as an OpenGL ES GPU. Storyboard runs across QNX's entire product line and all supported processors. We also have
a great deal of Photon experience and can assist customers in porting their applications.

Hi,
embedded Qt could be an alternative. We are going to do a port of X
Windows of the X Org Foundation ... including Qt, FLTK, SDL.
This would be a perfect base for the graphic capabilities of DACHSview
... a functionblock based graphical programming environment (internal
support for textual languages by an embedded C compiler and the

We included this deprecation notice so as to provide significant lead time for our customers to allow them to plan their
current and future product roadmaps. We continue to offer support to Photon today through our technical support
channels but we want to ensure that for any new designs, that other GUI tehcnologies be considered and deployed.
The 2 most popular UI technologies available for QNX today are Storyboard from Crank Software (www.cranksoftware.com)
and Qt (community and commercial licensing from Digia). OpenGL ES is also available and in 2013, you will also see HTML5
as a UI become an option as well as of now, access to this is restricted.
We investigated in great detail the ability to port Photon applications to other Ui environments and sought out 3rd
party companies to investigate various options. In teh end, we found that a porting library and/or photon encapsulation
would not be a viable option from a technical, commercial or roadmap perspective.
If you are looking to move your existing Photon applications to Storyboard, you will find that Crank Software has a
great deal of experience in Photon and of course their own products and could help from a services perspective.
If you are looking to move your existing Photon applications to Qt, you will find that KDAB, Digia and ICS are Qt
experts and of course have QNX experience.
For any new UI projects, Storyboard, Qt, OpenGL ES and later in 2013, HTML are you best options.
All of these UIs make use of our new composition manager framework and we plan to start posting experimental versions of
the composition manager and related technologies in September / October.

Hello Grant,
is the composition manager 100% conformant with the OpenKODE standard ?
The OpenKODE standard mentions:
"OpenKODE brings together:
• Khronos media APIs (OpenGL ES and OpenVG, with OpenSL ES and OpenMAX
AL to be added soon);
• EGL, which acts as a “hub” for the media APIs;
• OpenKODE Core, an API providing an abstraction of operating system
functions and libraries such as the event
system, file access and memory allocation. OpenKODE Core is part of this
specification."
Are there any plans to support Qt and HTML5 by the proprietary
composition manager of QSS ?
Will QSS build an additional abstraction layer over the "abstraction of
operating system functions and libraries" of OpenKODE?
Or is the compostion manager just a native implementation of OpenKODE?
