You don't need to modify startup-bios, but you need to run mkifs to regenerate the boot image, then transfer that onto the image.

You'll need to become familiar with the docs for startup-bios and mkifs, and you'll have to locate the build file used for your current system.

Colin - thanks.  Do I need to rebuild startup-bios or is it called in a way that I can modify the args without a rebuild?  If I need to rebuild startup-bios, is that all I need to do (change, recompile and put it in /boot/sys) or ???  Any cautions?

Try passing -x to startup-bios to enable PAE
