I wrote a virtual keyboard app quite a while ago... Unfortunately, it's still for a german keyboard layout, but that 
should be rather easy to change.

Source is attached; see if helps. Also works fine on a non-touch-system... just run 'phvkbd &' (i.e., in the background)
 from the pterm shell; you can then do your typing either with the mouse or with the keyboard...
