I'm installing QNX4 on a machine with no floppy drive. I entered the license number
manually when prompted to do so. The problem now is : how do I run the license
utility?
On a machine with a floppy I would run:
license /etc/licenses /fd0 (this copies licenses to a floppy)
then, to copy licenses from floppy to machine:
license /fd0
any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can edit the /.licenses file and add licenses manually.

Hi Paul,
Is there a USB port available ?
If yes, then you can use Pendrive with QNX4 filesystem to transfer old-style licenses (# license source destination).

Jacek

Hi,
Pendrive is a USB Stick.
You can also use USB HDD or even External USB Floppy Drive, everything what is supported by the Fsys.umass driver.

Paul !
1.When you entered the license number correctly
and pushed button "Add/F5" - QNX4 automatically adds your license into file
/.licenses on installing partition and runs utility license
2.After that you can push "Continue" -> "Done" and "Start/F2" for installing

The only new-style licenses can be typed during installation.
A old-style licenses must be transfered via "license" command.
You can tranfer them directly onto floppy drive or to specific path/directory which can be located on different media
like USB Stick, USB HDD, etc. ...
>If I put in the license number from another machine, such as
>qnx.00511520-xxxx which is the new type of license, it allows

To solve your problem I suggest to use the latest QNX4 Installation CD (November 2009).
Here are some necessary steps:
1) install QNX4 O/S only (use new-style license just to pass installation process completely),
2) meantime on the another machine transfer licenses onto floppy drive or USB Stick,...
Floppy method:
# license /etc/licenses/* /dev/fd0
USB Stick method is more complicated. The USB stack "io-usb" manager and "Fsys.umass" driver will be necessary. In short
you will need to create QNX4 partition, initialize filesystem on USB Stick and mount it. Finally transfer licenses to
mount directory (i.e. usb_stick):
# license /etc/licenses/* /usb_stick
3) after installation boot from HDD drive,
4) start io-usb and Fsys.umass driver,
4a) Floppy method
external USB floppy drive should be detected as /dev/fd0, so type
# license
or
# license /dev/fd0
4b) USB Stick method
mount your device (i.e. as /usb_stick) and type
# license /usb_stick/* /etc/licenses
5) refresh licenses
# license -r
check if a new licenses was added
# licinfo -a
6) now having license for qnx windows install this package from CD
# /cd/bin/phinstall
After everything don't forget to remove the /.license file with "temporary" license key.
Good luck,
Jacek

Paul,
It is difficult to read all your posts.
Can you do something with that ?

As far as I know the "license" command works for the QNX4 filesystem only.
You can switch from dos to qnx4 device (use "fdisk" and "dinit" against usb stick).
USB floppy drive should be detected automatically but the Fsys.umass.
First start USB Stack (# io-usb &) and connect USB floppy drive.
The "usb" command should print more info about this device (# usb -vvv).
Then start (# Fsys.umass &).
Does this driver print anything on the screen ?

Looks like usb floppy drive was detected. The /dev/fd0 device should be created and available in system.
Now type:
# license
or
# license /dev/fd0
or
# license /dev/fdX
Of course if licenses were transfered before
# license /etc/licenses/* /dev/fd0
(on the older machine with standard floppy).

It depends and there are two options.
1) QNX License diskette.
Such floppy disk is "special" and can't be mounted.
Also you can use it later during installation on machine with standard floppy drive.
To create type:
# license /etc/license/* /dev/fd0
To use it type:
# license
or
# license /dev/fd0
2) QNX 4 diskette.
It must be initialized first:
# dinit /dev/fd0
then you can mount it:
# mount /dev/fd0 /fd0
and transfer licenses:
# license /etc/licenses/* /fd0
To use it:
# mount /dev/fd0 /fd0
# license /fd0/* /etc/licenses
>If I run mount /dev/fd0 /fd0 I get an error.
Probably this is DOS or QNX License diskette.
Before mounting initialize QNX4 File System on it:
# dinit /dev/fd0

Jacek

How to install old_style licenses on PC without usb, floppy (even a floppy controller).
1. Creating lic.img file with old_style licenses (small virtual hard disk)
- contig lic.img 1440000
- mountimg –t78 lic.img
- dinit –h /dev/hd0.0t78
- mount /dev/hd0.0t78 /lic
- mkdir /lic/licenses
- license /etc/licenses /lic/licenses
2. Adding file lic.img to QNX4_INSTALL.iso (by UltraISO utility or other) to main directory.
YOU HAVE INSTALLATION DISK WITH OLD_STYLE LICENSES !
3. Run installation on new PC
4. When will window “Add_Licenses” – run shell by “QNX” button (left bottom corner).
5. Moving licenses to new partition :
- cp /cd/lic.img /
- mountimg –t78 /lic.img
- mount /dev/hd0.0t78 /lic
- license /lic/licenses /etc/licenses
- license -r
6. Close shell and push buttons “From floppy / F4” -> “Continue” -> “Done”
7. That’s all ! We can run “Start/F2” !
Good luck
AlexBurk
p.s.
1. utility contig can be used to create a contiguous QNX4 Fsys-hosted disk file ...
for work with mountimg utility.See attachment.
For src see :
http://www.openqnx.com/PNphpBB2+viewtopic-t-6642-highlight-mountimg.html
2. If PC hasn’t floppy controller – don’t push “From floppy / F4”,
after command “license –r “ restart installation AS UPGRADE !.
3.You can create batch file for point 5 and add it to installation disk :)
