Apple devices that support video playback
The section "Apple devices that support digital audio"
on Page 154 and 155 of mme_dev_guide.pdf lists the
minimum firmware version of several supported iPod
devices that support digital audio.

We need to provide a similar list for the product finalization
stage of our customer for the case of video playback
(analog video and analog audio output) as well.

Would it be possible to include this information in
future releases of the documentation and also
post into this list?

Device name Min firmware for video support
Pod nano 1G ??
iPod nano 2G ??
iPod nano 3G ??
iPod nano 4G ??
iPod 5G ??
iPod classic ??
iPod classic 120 Gig ??
iPod touch ??
iPod touch 2G ??
iPhone ??
iPhone 3G ??
iPhone 3Gs ??

Thanks,

The digital audio min firmware was taken from a spec from
Apple. I'll see if there is anything similar provided for
video support and pass along if I find it.

Peter

Re: Apple devices that support video playback
iPod Classic 5th Gen does s-video out
iPod Classic (i.e. 6th Gen) does component and svideo
Nano 3rd gen and 4th gen both do component and svideo
All iPhones and iPod touches do both component and svideo

No video on nano 1st gen and 2nd gen.

The video is routed out analog over the 30 pin connector. There is no firmware involved as far as I can tell. You also
need authentication to play video.

Gilles

Thank you Gilles.

Firmware is meant in the sense of receiving
and interpreting the commands from the MME.

This might be a limitation if not all firmware versions
support authentication.. (I don't know if all support.)

Can this be summarized as:

Device name Min firmware for video support
Pod nano 1G no video
iPod nano 2G no video
iPod nano 3G all firmwares
iPod nano 4G all firmwares
iPod 5G all firmwares
iPod classic all firmwares
iPod classic 120 Gig all firmwares
iPod touch all firmwares
iPod touch 2G all firmwares
iPhone all firmwares
iPhone 3G all firmwares
iPhone 3Gs all firmwares

where "all firmwares" means that the MME is capable
of initiating video playback on the given device model
regardless of the firmware.

Please kindly confirm.

On the models that do support video, they all supported authentication from their initial version (i.e. FW 1.0.0). So it
 shouldn't matter at all.

Yes. Looks good to me.

Thanks for the confirmation,

RE: Apple devices that support video playback
To be clear, all version of firmware should work provided there are no
bugs in the firmware. For all reported issues, they will be tested for
reproducibility on the latest version of firmware. If the issues is
fixed by the latest version of firmware then the device must be upgraded
to that version of firmware. This is consistent with Apple's support
policy.
