I completely agree, the functionality is in an awkward spot and was
kind of shoe-horned into the model.
When the functionality was added, it had fewer features and it seemed
overkill to force users into a multi-step/click activity:
File > Export > Select Export Type + Wizard walk through
when what they wanted (initially) was to select an area of the timeline
and save it as a new kev file.
Now that there are more options, an export wizard might be be a better
workflow and with the new command mappings could even be mapped
to a fast key/toolbar item or custom menu.
