RE: 4.8 internal workspace directory
Oh, you are talking about the "configuration" directory. It's different
from the workspace. It holds the product data not user data.
You can run the qde(.exe) from command line and use this option
"-configuration <where_you_want_it_to_be>".
Again, it's also fixed now. The next IDE 4.8 build will have its own
configuration directory.

I'm not talking about the user workspace but the 4.X directory found under the momentics directory. Unless there is a
way to select the "momentics" directory?

Right, and it was fixed after this prototype build.
BTW, you can always select a different workspace when running 4.8, you don't have to accept the default one.

The workspace directory used by 4.8 is the same as 4.7 ( named 4.7 ). When I started 4.8 all the extra plug-in I had
install in 4.7 where gone, but if I tried to re-install them 4.8 would say they are already installed.
Only solution was to delete the 4.7 workspace and start from scratch. But this morning I started 4.7 once I was done and
restarted 4.8 it`s has though all plug-in are gone again.
Seems to me 4.8 needs its own directory ;-)
