Copy workspace settings
Hi all,
I am managing different projects in different workspaces.
When I need to create a new workspace now, I am missing all the settings I have made in the last workspace.

I found out that I am abla to export / import the Preferences (like keybindings) via the Export / Import Dialog, but
then I am still missing the settings like Views etc.

Does anybody know how I can create a workspace "template" that contains all my favourite settings?

I have read that someone has just copied the .metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.runtime/.settings, but it didn't really
work for me (I guess all the other plugins could contain some interesting information that is missing in the new
workspace then.

I am using the 4.6.0 IDE.

Regards, Christian
Re: Copy workspace settings
Hi, Christian,

My own method is to take a workspace that has all of my favourite settings and copy it (the workspace folder and all of
its contents). Then I open the copy, delete all of the projects from it, exit the IDE, and ZIP the workspace folder.
Now I have a template for new workspaces that is set up just as I like it: just unZIP and start working.

HTH,

Christian

Thanks, Christian.

I thought there would be another way, something like "Export Workspace Settings" or something.

But your way is much better than creating each new workspace from scratch ;)

Re: Copy workspace settings
Hi, Christian,

There may be a better way, but I've never felt the need to look for it because this solution is very easy to script.
Every Eclipse release gets better in the support for exporting of preferences, but I think it still requires that plug-
ins opt in to the export protocol, and some still do not. Also, there are many settings that are stored using the "
dialog settings" mechanism that I don't know how to export (if it's even possible).

When you use the "File -> Switch Workspace" menu action, there is an option to copy workspace settings, which I suppose
would be especially useful if you're switching to a new workspace. I don't know which settings this entails; you might
give it a try.
