Error setting idle rate
I am trying to install QNX on my system and get the following error:
Error setting idle rate

I took a snapshot of the message on my monitor and it is attached.

Out motherboard is Asus Rampage 3 Extreme. If any additional info is needed, please let me know.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Error setting idle rate
Are you using the latest BIOS?
Re: Error setting idle rate
Yes, I am using the latest BIOS for the motherboard. The motherboard itself has many USB ports but only 1 PS2/2 port
(and it says it is for the keyboard).

I have tried almost every imaginable combination with the keyboard and the mouse, but to no avail.

Any help is appreciated.
Re: Error setting idle rate
Does the BIOS have any options to set the keyboard rate?

You have tried both USB keyboards and PS/2 keyboards?
Re: Error setting idle rate
Apparently the BIOS I have was not the latest one, and a new version was issued by Asus a few weeks ago. I will update
it now and see if that works.

At the moment the BIOS does not have any options to set the keyboard rate. It only has an option to control the speed of
the USB contoller (Hull:12Mbps or Hi:480Mbps). Tried both settings and still the same end result, and yes tried using
both USB and PS/2 keyboard.
Re: Error setting idle rate
I have just updated the BIOS to the latest version, but still the same problem. This is getting really frustrating now.
Re: Error setting idle rate
Another possibility is that the hardware doesn't support setting the
idle rate and so will use any hardware defaults.

Are you able to actually use either type of keyboard (try Caps Lock key)?

If you completely disable USB do you notice any difference with the PS/2
keyboard?
Re: Error setting idle rate
I have just disabled the USB functionality in the BIOS, and this seems to have worked. The keyboard is now functional,
but do not have a mouse as the motherboard has plenty USB ports, but only 1 PS/2 port for the keyboard.

I will try to install the OS now, and once installed will try to launch it with enabled USB functionality. I will let
you know how this goes.

Many thanks for your help.
Re: Error setting idle rate
Ok, sorry it took a while. I have managed to install it but I have had to disable USB support once more to get it to
boot. I now have a working QNX machine, albeit without a mouse so am finding it a little bit difficult to navigate
between certain tabs such as when trying to configure the network card.
Is there a a QNX equivalent keyboard sequence (such as in Microsoft which is CTRL TAB), to navigate between tabs within
a dialog ?
Re: Error setting idle rate
Use tab to go to the next field, and Shift+Tab to go to the previous field.

What happens if you plug in a USB mouse once the system is up and running?
Re: Error setting idle rate
I am fine navigating between fields, but cannot get to the next tab within the window.
The only way I can get the system to boot is to disable USB functionality, so there is your answer. Once I enable USB
functionality and plug the mouse in, I get the following errior:
Unable to start HID server

I am going to go and buy a PS/2 splitter tomorrow that will allow me to run a PS/2 keyboard and a PS/2 mouse at the same
time, so will let you know how I get on with this.

I have had enough for today, so will leave it at that.

Thanks for all the help provided today, and I will have an update tomorrow.
Re: Error setting idle rate
Sorry this is a frustrating experience for you - on our end we don't
have resources to test every x86 mobo in currently in the market.

From what you have reported so far, the USB controller on the mobo might
not be compatible with our USB drivers, so if you can provide the PCI
device id and vendor id for the controller, it will help at least
attempt to locate any datasheet or device errata to enable the drivers
to work with that mobo. For sake of argument if you can reproduce this
same error using another mobo that has a different USB controller I will
stand corrected.

I guess what I am trying to tell you is that not all USB controllers are
made equal and they are certainly not all compatible with respect to
each other, a lot of the compatibility work is done in the driver on a
device by device basis - this is a sad state of affairs in the PC world,
but unfortunately this is what we all have to deal with.

Let me know how things go for you. I will help any way possible.

Good luck!
Re: Error setting idle rate
Ok, I have tried to use the PS/2 splitter and get the following results:
- sometimes the keyboard will work, but the mouse will not
- sometimes the mouse will work, but the keyboard will not
- sometimes both will not work at all
- sometimes both will work for a very short period of time, after which they will stop responding.

It is totally random behaviour.

The thing is that I just want to set up the Network settings to I can set up Remote Access on it.

In regards to providing the USB controller PCI device id and vendor id, I will try and find this, but in the meantime I
can provided a link to the manual for the motherboard in hope that this somehow may help you.

I will try and find the above ids from Asus directly.

Thanks
Re: Error setting idle rate
Just read through the motherboard manual and this is the info for the USB section:
NEC USB 3.0 Controller
- 2 x USB 3.0/2.0 ports (at back panel)

Intel ICH10R Southbridge
- 9 x USB 2.0/1.1 ports (2 ports at midboard; 6 ports at back panel, 1 reserved for ROG Connect)

I hope this help.

Thanks
Re: Error setting idle rate
lt is certainly a start:

1) Instead of logging into Photon, [Shutdown->Exit to text mode] so you
can use the Neutrino console, what's the output of "pci -v" (this will
provide a listing of all PCI devices including the vendor and device ids
- use a pager like more or less to go through it).

2) What are the default USB settings for that mobo? Is it set to USB3.0
or not? If so, then try seeing if forcing USB2.0 makes any difference.
Re: Error setting idle rate
Right,

1) I have done so, and here are the ids:
PCI version = 3.00
Class = Bridge (Host/PCI)
Vendor ID = 8086h, Intel Corporation
Device ID = 3406h, 5520/5500/X58 I/O Hub to ESI Port
PCI index = 0h
Class code = 060000h
Revision ID = 13h
Bus number = 0
Device number = 0
Function num = 0
Status Reg = 10h
Command Reg = 0h
Header type = 0h Single-function
BIST = 0h Build-in-self-test not supported
Latency Timer = 0h
Cache Line Size = 0h
Subsystem Vendor ID = 1043h
Subsystem ID = 836bh
Max Lat = 0ns
Min Gntt = 0ns
PCI Int Pin = NC
Interrupt line = 0
CPU Interrupt - 0h
Capabilities Pointer = 60h
Capability ID = 5h - Message Signalled Interrupts
Capabilites = 102h - 0h
Capability ID = 10h - PCI Express
Capabilities = 42h - 8020h
Capability ID = 1h - Power Managemenet
Capabilities = c803h - 8h

Not sure if this is only the USB 3.0 listing, and if you need any others, I will type these up too.

2) I have tried every possibility and none of them work, trust me. Definitely some kind an issue talking with this
particular piece of hardware.

Thanks
Re: Error setting idle rate
Wow I wasn't expecting you to type all this out by hand - don't bother
typing everything out, use this to filter the output and copy just the
results using the filter:

pci -v | grep -e "Class =" -e "Vendor ID =" -e "Device ID ="

Also, which version of Neutrino are you using? The latest one is 6.5.0.
If you aren't using the latest release, please try that first.

Additionally to avoid future frustration please understand that you are
using a relatively updated piece of PC hardware that that might or might
not fully conform to standard - certainly it doesn't appear compatible
with our current USB stack (In my experience some devices don't always
follow the USB spec - USB stacks usually have built-in workarounds if
they have had the time and resources to test all the USB controllers on
the market).

If you are already using the latest release, there are a few more things
worth probing, but it does require some extensive knowledge of UNIX-like
systems including navigating without a GUI.

1) Clarify whether you can start the system with the PS/2 keyboard
plugged in AND USB enabled in the BIOS (hopefully set to USB2 and NOT
USB3), but do not plug in any USB devices. Can you boot Neutrino or not?

2) If you can boot Neutrino in #1, then plug in a USB device (start with
a USB drive) and see how it responds, check /dev for device entries, and
use the mount utility to check whether it was auto-mounted usually under
/fs otherwise see if you can mount the device.

3) If you can mount the drive, then capture the output from pci -v into
a file and copy that the the USB drive.

4) Restart the USB stack manually with verbosity enabled, use the
sloginfo utility to capture the system logs. The USB stack might provide
insight with respect to your hardware. We provide online documentation
to start io-usb (the USB stack):

http://www.qnx.com/developers/docs/6.5.0/index.jsp?topic=/com.qnx.doc.neutrino_utilities/i/io-usb.html

Good luck!
Re: Error setting idle rate
Ok, the output with filters is attached.

>Also, which version of Neutrino are you using?
Using the latest one for sure.

I definitely understand what you mean about being on the very latest hardware, and that is noted.

1) Cannot boot. Error message:
Unable to start HID server
4102 terminate with signal 11
4101 exited with status 0
4100 exited with status 0
4099 exited with status 0

It exits to the console, at which point the keyboard is not functional.

2) Cannot boot. Same message as above.

Cannot proceed onto steps 3 and 4.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks
