Is there any way to obtain a number of received and transmitted characters through a given device?

What's the recommended way to do it?

I vaguely remember something like "iserial" from qnx4 days, it displayed name of the device and number of sent and 
received characters.

The reason: we are integrating gprs modem to our device and we would like to have some kind of a watch-dog.  If the gprs
 connection goes wrong (no received data in some time interval) we would try to reconnect. I wanted to use lcp-echo 
features of pppd, but they are not implemented in the gprs modem.
