Should we change the project name?
I've received a pr saying that
"""The name of QNX Operating System project
(http://community.qnx.com/sf/projects/core_os) should be "QNX Neutrino
Operating System", so that people don't think it's about QNX 2 or QNX 4.
"""

Personally, I think the current name "QNX operating system" is good as it is. We explain in text that it's about
Neutrino, QNX6. I think adding "Neutrino" is unecssary. But who cares about my opinion.

I think users should vote.

So post if you think we should change the name of this projecct to
"QNX Neutrino Operating System" project.

QNX Neutrino is the kernel only. QNX6 is the operating system.

Personally I think that QNX Operating System is just fine. We should
just add a small note about QNX2 and QNX4 on the
main page perhaps.

Sorry Colin, but that's wrong. We don't have a product called QNX 6 (we did briefly, and the name has stuck). The
correct name of the OS is QNX Neutrino. Calling this project the QNX Operating System is misleading.

This isn't a matter for a vote; it's a case of incorrect branding. The project should be the QNX Neutrino Operating
System.

RE: Should we change the project name?
Hi Steve,

We don't have to (and actually should not) match the branding here; this is
a technology project whose binaries are used in a product whose name, today,
is QNX Neutrino. The technology is QNX's operating system and the currently
proposed name is a very valid option IMO.

That's an interesting issue for the management of open-whatever projects.

I believe the os project and wiki pages must be written in the language and vocabullary of its users: the software geeks
. I think I have Seb's direction to persue that approach.

I do agree that the project name must not be confusing. But I would do that by using whatever name the qnx software geek
community actually uses. So I do believe this is a choice to be decided by consensus and not by corporate branding.
(Sure we should identify the corporate brand, but as Colin says, i think that's a footnote.)

I conjeccture that no coder calls it "QNX Neutrino Operating System". Way to many letters. I'm guessing people call it "
QNX" or QNX OS. But if the general code hacking community starts calling it COSDPW "the cool OS dan and peter wrote"
i'd be happy to call it that too.

The problem is that there is a significant number of qnx software
geeks who still remember QNX4 and QNX2 =;-)

Personally, I call it Neutrino, plain and simple.

... but if we called it Neutrino, then we loose the people who
think that this is an atomic particle.

... so we call it QNX OS, then we confuse the people who think
that they might find some QNX4 and QNX2 stuff ... believe me,
if you write it in the intro no one will read it (as per the
build instructions =;-)

... so we call it QNX Neutrino Operating System, but then that
is too long to write we say ... QNX Neutrino OS is too succint.

I take back my +1. I like Neutrino, I don't write out the name
of the "project" very often, but I don't care enough to fight
one way or the other.

People are elastic, they will conform to whatever we ingrain
in their brains. The name has started as is, so we had might
as well leave it as is.

Now ... what we really should be talking about is a mascot!

Re: RE: Should we change the project name?
I'm not insisting that everyone refer to the OS by its full, correct brand name -- i.e. QNX(R) Neutrino(R) Realtime
Operating System -- every time he or she refers to the OS; I'm trying to correct the name of the project. Calling it "
Neutrino Operating System" would be better than calling it "QNX Operating System", or are you prepared to discuss QNX 2,
3, and 4 here? Where should we discuss QNX Neutrino? There doesn't seem to be a project for it.

When I edit the documentation, I always make sure that it refers to the products correctly because doing otherwise can
confuse people. Making things clear is part of my job.

Re: RE: Should we change the project name?
Working in a company which still ships products with QNX4 and supports fielded products with QNX2 and just recently
released its first product with QNX6, you can see how we use the names. ;-)

You guys can call it anything you like, I will still call them QNX2, QNX4 and QNX6 and skip the debate as to why the
products we shipped with QNX2, really had QNX3 in them. :-P
