Clock drift
Hi,

We are currently evaluating a new computer model for use in our shipping QNX4 systems and have serious problems with
clock drift: the system clock is slowing by almost 1 second per minute! The BIOS clock is running OK, it is just the QNX
 time which is slowing down.

The computer has a Core 2 Duo E8400 CPU @ 3.0GHz, and I don't believe we have ever used Core 2 Duo processors in our
systems before. Could this be a QNX compatibility issue with newer processors? Have you seen any such problems on other
systems?

Best Regards,
  Christian Friberg

We have seen such problem when BIOS was doing lots of stuff in the background via SMI. Make sure USB emulation is turned
off and any other monitoring feature, that may help.

Thanks Mario! I have tried disabling most BIOS features but the same problem persists unfortunately. This computer uses
a AWARD BIOS v6.00PG, do you recall what BIOS was used when you witnessed the same issue?
RE: RE: Clock drift
It was a IBM server with their own BIOS.

Do you have any usb devices connected, if so try disconnecting them.

RE: Clock drift
I think most modern Intel processors have variable core clock frequencies
(for power/temperature management). This could potentially play havoc with
an OS that doesn't expect this. Is there a BIOS setting to disable a
feature such as "SpeedStep" or "frequency scaling" or something like that?

Good Luck!

RE: Clock drift
Here is an Intel web page with some information on their Enhanced Speedstep
Technology, which (according to other Intel web page is indeed a feature of
the Core 2 Duo E8400 CPU):

  http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/203838.htm

The above page mentions several requirements, including BIOS and operating
system support.

Re: RE: Clock drift
Thanks all for your suggestions! It turned out to be an issue with the BIOS after all, an upgrade to a newer version
resolved the problem.
